Froutan has a reputation as a cloud technology innovator and was previoulsy responsible for designing, building and managing Google's green data center operations.

He was the main spokesman for Google's US$600m Iowa data center which was mothballed in 2008 and picked up again last year. The data center will be fully operation by the end of 2011.

Nivranix President and CEO Scott Genereux said Froutan's skills will be used to further drive market share gains against cloud service providers and storage hardware vendors.

He will be responsible for Nivanix's long-term cloud strategy and the optmization of its data center efficiency.

"Over the last six months, Nirvanix has posted major share gains in Fortune 500 companies versus its principal competitors," Genereux said.

"With Paul's strong background in managed services and data center efficiency, we're now in a position to further expand our market presence and help even more enterprise customers make the shift to the enterprise cloud."

Nirvanix, which is based in San Diego, California, provides public, hybrid and private cloud solutions.

Funding partners for the company include Intel Capital, Valhalla Partners and Mission Ventures.

Froutan said he can see growth potential at Nirvanix.

"The company is the only service provider to own a public cloud storage network and deliver private cloud storage nodes, enabling it to provide hybrid, federated cloud storage with complete network visibility, management and service level guarantees," Froutan said.
