Colocation and interconnection services provider Equinix announced on Wednesday a plan to expand its campus in Ashburn, Virginia, targeted at the neighbouring Washington, D.C., market.
The company is planning to launch a new DC11 facility in early 2013, with first phase expected to bring online space for 1,200 cabinets. Equinix expects to invest US$88m into building out Phase I. In Phase II, the company is planning to ad capacity for an additional 1,800 cabinets.
Equinix is also planning to start building out Phase II of another data center in the region: DC10. The first phase of this facility is opening in March and Phase II – a $21m investment – is expected to come online in the fourth quarter.
Charles Meyers, president of the Americas at Equinix, said the company continued to see strong demand for its services in the Washington metropolitan area. “With the DC10 expansion and the addition of DC11, we are positioned to better serve our growing ecosystem of global customers, while further strengthening our leadership position in this important market,” Meyers said.
Also on Wednesday, Equinix reported its full-year 2011 earnings on Wednesday. Its annual revenue was US$1.6bn – up 32% from revenue reported for 2010. Its net income for the year was $94m.
