Equinix has opened its fifth International Business Exchange (IBX) data center for Dallas, US, the home of its first ever IBX build.

Adding an additional 34,000 sq ft of data center space to its regional offering, the data center can hold 450 cabinet equivalents.

Dallas-Fort Worth is the fourth largest metropolitan area in the US, and according to Equinix President of North America Charles Meyers its central US position places it close to a large number of telecommunications providers.

"Equinix has long catered to the high concentration of telecommunications and IT services companies in and around Dallas-Fort Worth," Meyers said.

He said there was a strong demand for peering and interconnection services in the market.
Equinix said it has invested about US$25m into the first phase of the facility - a second phase build-out is also planned, covering 23,000 sq ft of additional space and another 450 cabinet equivalents.

The data center will have connections through the Equinix Internet Exchange for public and private peering and Equinix Carrier Ethernet for transactions with other Equinix customers.
