Irish telecommunications company Eircom is considering building a new data center in the west of Dublin which could be one of the largest facilities of its type in Ireland.
According to a report by the Irish Independent, the build could cost as much as €200m and create hundreds of jobs for the local construction industry.
Eircom is considering using an existing site it owns at Clondalkin which is currently used for a logistics center and ancillary buildings. It said these will be demolished if planning permission – which it has already applied for – is granted.
Eircom has proposed a two-storey data center covering 473,000 sq ft and a separate two-storey office building covering 46,000 sq ft for the site.
It also plans to construct a combined heat and power plant.
In December Digital Realty broke ground on its 80,000 sq m Profile Park facility which will house eight turnk-key flex data centers with a total capacity of 15MW in West Dublin.
Telecity also operates three data centers in the Dublin area. Its latest facility is in test phase.
Interxion operates two facilities in the city and Microsoft and Google also operate out of the country.
Eircom currently operates data centers in Dublin City, in the Citywest Business Park, Clonshaugh and Dundrum which offer hosting and colocation services with connections to Tier 1 carriers in the US, Europe and UK.
The telco also offers an Amazon Web Services cloud through its Tier III-certified facilities.
