Rafael Cano Bernaldo

Head of Infrastructure Engineering, TOTEM Towerco

Master's Degree in Industrial Engineering from UP Madrid, UAX and Alkmaar (Netherlands) in different specialities. He is currently Head of Infrastructure Engineering at TOTEM Towerco, being a member of the Senior Experts Committee of the Orange Group, as a reference of the French company in energy, environment and sustainability.

In the last 25 years, he has been working in telecommunications operators such as Orange, Deustche Telekom, and Vodafone, leading engineering projects, design, construction and maintenance of radio stations, points of presence of fixed and mobile networks, and of course Data Centers.

He has participated in the development and implementation of energy saving initiatives in all types of telecommunications sites, including satellite, developed in Spain, being responsible for the first implementations in Europe of solar panels on a massive scale in telecommunications centres, geothermal, hydrogen and freecooling installations in radio stations and even the signing of the first PPAs in the telecommunications sector. He has also worked for companies such as Red Eléctrica de España, Lucent Technologies and Energíe Noord West (Netherlands).

He is currently developing Digital Twin projects, artificial intelligence and deployment of new technologies for all telecommunications operators, with the idea of improving deployment times, reducing energy consumption, minimising CO2 emissions, and starting to implement circular economy initiatives and adaptation to climate change, all while guaranteeing the quality and provision of services to their customers.

Rafa is an instructor for Data Center Dynamics for the Power Professional course and participates in different homologation and standardisation committees with entities such as Orange Group, BUYIN, UNE, Colegio de Ingenieros Industriales, etc. He is also a contributor to a program on Capital Radio called "Conecta Ingeniería" where every week, he refers to a news item on engineering or technology.
