Windstream Hosted Solutions has launched a data center in McLean, Virginia. The managed-hosting company’s data center for the mid-Atlantic region provides 45,000 sq ft of raised floor and provides up to 200kVa – power capacity that can eventually scale to 9,00kVa, the company said.

This is a second data center Windstream has launched this year. In April it announced the opening of a 30,000 sq ft facility in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Kip Turco, senior VP of data center operations at Windstream, said the facility was designed to meet modern customers’ reliability needs. “"More than ever, organizations require the assurance that their data and infrastructure is secure, regardless of whether they are in the private or public sector,” he said.

“This is especially true for those businesses that have chosen to locate some or all of their operations in the cloud.”

The data center has 2N (A side and B side) power distribution and parallel multi-module uninterruptible power supplies (UPS). It also has a fully redundant core network infrastructure.

While it has built out some data centers on its own, Windstream has primarily expanded its data center footprint through acquisition.

In 2010, it bought Hosted Solutions from Abry Partners for US$310m cash, which gave it five data centers, and in 2011, it made a mega-acquisition, shelling out $2.3bn for Paetec. Through this deal, Windstream gained Paetec’s seven data centers and about 36,700 network route miles.
