A data center operated by Russian technology firm VK has been attacked by a drone.
“A drone attack targeted VK's data center in the Leningrad region. VK services are available to users as usual,” VK said in a short statement on its website.
The social media firm operates a facility near St. Petersburg, in Novosergievka in the Vsevolozhsk district.
The company didn’t detail the severity of the damage. Internet monitoring firm NetBlocks, however, noted a 44 percent drop in VK network activity over the weekend.
VK is the latest technology firm to see its facilities hit amid the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Russian bank Sberbank and technology firm Yandex have both seen facilities struck by Ukrainian forces. Russian forces, meanwhile, have attacked numerous data centers across Ukraine.
Facilities around Kyiv operated by Parkovyi Data Center, MiroHost, Datagroup, Vodafone Ukraine, De Novo, Cosmonova, Omega Telecom, Ukrsibbank, and Ukrtelecom have been hit in recent weeks. Outside Kyiv, facilities operated by Tenet in Odesa and the RX-Name data center in the Nikolaev/Mykolaiv area of southern Ukraine have also been hit.
Earlier this year, Ukrainian forces struck a data center in Russian-occupied Ukraine in Prymorsk.
Founded in 1998, Moscow-listed VK offers various Internet services including email, social media, and instant messaging, as well as cloud services via VK Cloud and data center services via M100.
As well as operating its own facilities, the company is known to lease capacity around Moscow and St. Petersburg.
VK Cloud documentation says it operates four availability zones in the Russian Federation as well as one in Kazakhstan. Russian bank Sovcombank is a known customer of the cloud platform.
In 2024, VK announced plans to launch another data center in St. Petersburg, shortly after also launching a new facility in Moscow.
