Virgin Media O2 has deployed 5G at Twickenham Stadium, the home of English rugby.
The telco announced today (February 12) that it has rolled out a dedicated 5G network to the venue ahead of this year's Guinness Men’s Six Nations. England played its first home match of the tournament on Saturday, beating France 26-25.
The carrier confirmed to DCD that the network is not based on its 5G Standalone network, which launched last year.
According to Virgin Media O2, the network carried 40 percent more data at the fixture against France, compared to the previous Autumn International fixture that took place last year.
Virgin Media O2 noted that its deployment at the stadium features a new bespoke 5G distributed antenna system (DAS) network, which is dedicated solely to providing reliable 5G coverage to supporters inside the stadium.
The carrier has deployed 34 dedicated 5G coverage zones at the venue. Virgin Media O2 claims this is the highest capacity DAS stadium deployment in the UK.
"Our new dedicated stadium network is designed to deal with this by providing a huge capacity boost to O2 customers inside the stadium and minimizing matchday disruption to our customers in the surrounding areas," said Dr. Robert Joyce, director of mobile access engineering, at O2.
Virgin Media stated last year that it invests £2 million ($2.5m) every day on its mobile network.
Earlier this week, rival carrier EE confirmed that it had deployed its 5G Standalone network at Wembley Stadium.
