Greenlandic telco Tusass is planning a new data center in the capital city, Nuuk.
Announced this week, the new facility will be located in the Qinngorput area. Construction will start “as soon as possible” with expected delivery by the end of 2026.
Further details on location and specifications were not shared. The telecoms firm said the project will total DKK 155 million ($21.5m).
DCD has reached out for more information.
Tusass COO, Jonas Hasselriis, said: "A modern data center in Nuuk, to house our most critical infrastructure, is a necessity. It is not only about security of supply, but also about the general security of society. This data center is the first investment in our new strategy, and in the coming years we will invest massively in increased security in Greenlandic telecommunications."
Greenlandic construction company Permagreen has been appointed as the main contractor on the building
Permagreen CEO, Jeppe Bloch Steffensen, added: "The collaboration with Tusass gives us the opportunity to show our expertise in construction and technical installations. We look forward to delivering a data center that meets the highest industry standards and contributes to the country's digital future."
Tele Greenland A/S was created in 1997 through the merging of Tele Greenland and Kalaallit Allakkeriviat (Greenland Postal Service). The company was rebranded to Tusass in 2021.
Online listings such as DataCenterMap suggest that Tusass currently operates one data center in Nuuk.
Greenland has two subsea cables, known as Greenland Connect, which links the Danish territory with Canada and Iceland, and an extension known as Greenland Connect North. Tusass owns both. Another domestic cable is in development.
State-owned Tusass, which is soon switching off its 3G services, has three ground station sites in Ittoqqortoormiit, Qaanaaq, and Tasiilaq. The company leases capacity from Hispasat’s Amazonas Nexus satellite, and previously signed a satellite connectivity distribution deal with satellite firm OneWeb.
As part of a recent strategy announcement, Tusass aims to invest DKK 1.9 billion ($263m) towards satellite partnerships, an additional submarine cable from Qaqortoq to Ilulissat, radio chain upgrades, improved 5G networks, and data centers. Approximately DKK 350 million ($48.5m) is set to come from an expected grant from the EU.
