Turkey’s national satellite operator Türksat is planning to build a new data center outside Ankara.
Announced this week by the company and Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, Türksat's Gölbaşı Data Center will triple Türksat’s current data center capacity in the first phase and increase it more than eight times in the second phase.
The 21MW facility will be established on a 28,500-square-meter (306,770 sq ft) site in Ankara. It will reportedly feature six system halls, two high-performance rooms with 20 cabins each, and 6,000 sqm (64,585 sq ft) of white space.
Construction will start later this year for a 2027 launch date.
Uraloğlu said: “Gölbaşı Data Center will be one of the largest data centers in Turkey with its giant area of 28,500 square meters. The construction, electrical, mechanical, and telecommunication infrastructure of the project will begin this year. With the investment to be made, Türksat's current data center capacity will be increased by three times in the first phase and by over eight times in the second phase."
Founded in 1990, Türksat is the sole communications satellite operator in Turkey and owned by the Turkish sovereign wealth fund.
The company currently has six satellites in operation – Türksat 3A, 4A, 4B, 5A, 5B, and 6A. It operates the Gölbaşı Ground Station in the Gölbaşı district of Ankara Province.
Türksat offers IT services –including data center services – through its Türksat Bilişim unit and consumer ISP and TV services through Kablo (formerly Teledünya).
