Tim Zaman has joined generative AI business OpenAI to help build 'frontier clusters.'

Zaman spent the past two years at Google DeepMind, where he says he was "responsible for DeepMind's engineering/research productivity."

Prior to his time at Google, Zaman spent four years as the head of AI infrastructure at Tesla, building out the company's AI infra and AI platform teams.

In his last year at the Elon Musk company, he also helped out with Twitter/X and led the build and design of xAI's first supercomputer.

"I joined OpenAI!" Zaman said on X. "We're going to build and launch the largest (and most delightful) supercomputers to power frontier AI research.

"DeepMind is obviously truly formidable and to the moon; and I had a great time - but I missed a smaller [and] tighter team I found in OpenAI <3."

OpenAI is aggressively building out its own compute infrastructure, alongside its Microsoft cloud contract, most notably through the $500 billion Stargate joint venture.

This week, OpenAI raised $40 billion at a $300bn valuation.
