Silicon Valley start-up Tilera has launched two 64-bit many-core processors into general availability earlier this week, claiming servers based on its processors use less power and less space than Intel Xeon-based machines.
The processors are the 36-core Tile-Gx36 and the 16-core Tile-Gx16. Targeted at major web 2.0 customers, Tilera’s products are optimized to run homogeneous applications that require a lot of parallel processing.
The company said its processors will reduce overall cost and power consumption in data centers, enhance networking infrastructure capabilities and support more video capabilities in media applications.
In a cloud application, a single Tile-Gx-36-basee server provides better performance than a Xeon-based system using one-fifth the power and one-eighth the space required by the competitor system, Tilera said.
Used in networking equipment, the 36-core processor can provide more than 40Gb per second of L2/L3 packet-forwarding performance across small and large packet sizes, using less than 25 watts, the company claimed.
Along with announcing general availability of the two processors, Tilera announced the appointment of Devesh Garg, one of its co-founders, as CEO.
Garg returns to the position he filled since the company’s inception in 2004. He stepped down in 2007 to work as managing director of the Bessemer Venture Partners India find but remained an active investor and shareholder in the company.
“The strides that Tilera has made during my time abroad have been amazing,” Garg said. “I’m returning to the helm at an excellent time and with strong tailwind. Tilera has great design wins and a family of processors coming out that beats the competition by miles.”
