International carrier TeliaSonera has sold its MediaConnect business to Hibernia as part of an agreement that will see its fiber-backbone form the core of a new network spanning Europe and the US.

The partnership provides Hibernia with access to TeliaSonera International Carrier Points of Presence and venues in the US with reach into Europe, according to Hibernia CEO Bjarni Thorvardarson.

In a media release, Hibernia said TeliaSonera operates one of the world’s largest fiber backbones.

TeliaSonera International Carrier President Erik Hallberg said both Hibernia’s and TeliaSonera’s platforms have been based on the NIMBRA MSR platform, which means both company’s network scan be seamlessly integrated.

“There is a real synergy between both TeliaSonera International Carrier and Hibernia Media, in terms of existing network and back-office capabilities,” Hallberg said.

Meanwhile, TeliaSonera-owned company called Cygate announced its purchase of Information Infrastructure Management, a systems integrator in the data center industry.

The Nordic company offers backup, storage and virtualization services. It did not disclose the sum of the deal.

TeliaSonera offers mobile services in a range of countries under different brands including 18 from the Nordics and others in the Baltic regions.

The company resulted from a merger between Swedish and Finish telecommunications companies Telia and Sonera and is part owned by the Governments of Sweden and Finland.
