Technology company Sun launched a new flash storage array on Monday, designed to accelerate Oracle and My SQL database workloads.

Sun offers its F5100 Flash Array with capacity of up to two terabytes and 1.6 million read and 1.2 million write IOPS performance. The array takes up the space of a single rack unit and consumes 300 watts. According to a Sun statement, the array's IOPS performance is comparable to that of 3,000 enterprise hard disk drives, spanning more than 14 racks and consuming about 40,000 watts.

"Today's announcements build on Sun's strategy to lead a new storage hierarchy driven by flash technology to accelerate I/O throughput," Sun EVP of the Systems Group John Fowler said in a statement.

Sun ships the array with Flash-optimized software and says it is the only vendor to provide a fully integrated flash-based hardware and software.

Up to 16 separate hosts can be connected to one F5100 array, allowing more than one application environment to use it. The unit stars at $45,995.
