A subsea cable has been repaired ahead of schedule in Sitka, Alaska.
Owned by Alaskan telecommunications provider General Communications Inc. (GCI), the Alaska United Southeast cable suffered an outage on March 13, 2025.
Repairs were completed by March 17, 2025, by the cable ship Cable Innovator, ahead of the nine-day timeline initially provided by GCI.
As reported by local press Sitka Sentinel, Josh Edge, corporate communications manager at GCI, said all services and traffic were moved back onto the fiber by 6am local time on March 17.
He added at the time that it was difficult to provide an exact timeline until the fiber was pulled up.
The damage did not impact Internet service when the problem was flagged, so traffic was able to be diverted and maintenance was conducted around 10 miles from Angoon in order to prevent a more serious break like the one suffered last August.
Customers were able to receive some Internet and cell phone service through alternative technologies, such as satellite and microwave.
The Alaska United Southeast cable is the only cable to currently land in Sitka.
Earlier this month, Southeast Alaska suffered an Internet outage after an Alaska Communications subsea fiber cable broke. Prior to that, a cable break in Quintillion’s subsea cable in Northern Alaska caused widespread outages in the state.
Companies, such as AP&T have also looked to improve and develop subsea infrastructure for Alaskan communities.
