ST Telemedia Global Data Centres India (STT GDC India) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Uttar Pradesh in India for the development of an "AI City."
Under the MoU, STT GDC India will provide its data centers, enabling the AI computing infrastructure by its partner companies. The MoU is hoped to aid Utter Pradesh's goal of establishing India's first "AI City," set to be in Lucknow according to reports from the Times of India.
Lalit Khanna, chief operating officer of STT GDC India, said: “We are incredibly grateful to the Government of Uttar Pradesh for their vision and support in bringing this project to life. STT GDC India is committed to contributing to Uttar Pradesh’s digitally enabled growth via the enabling digital infrastructure.
"We are already committed to the state with investments to the tune of RS 4100 Cr ($482m) and have operationalized our first data center park in the state in Noida with further developments in the pipeline."
STT GDC India's live data center in Noida has an IT capacity of 17.3MW and a total power capacity scalable up to 35MW. A second data center is currently under development.
The data centers and AI compute provided will be accessible to multiple sectors, startups, research institutions, and governance.
STT GDC India previously signed a $1 billion MoU with the Government of Uttar Pradesh for the development of data centers in the state in early 2023. In September 2024, the company announced it would invest Rs 26,000 crores ($3.2 billion) in India to expand its data center operations.
STT GDC’s India unit is majority-owned by STT GDC. Tata Communications holds a minority stake in the company. STT GDC India currently manages more than 318 MW of critical IT load spread across 28 facilities including facilities under development, across 10 cities in India.
