ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC) has broken ground on a new data center campus in Johor, Malaysia.
The company this week announced the groundbreaking of the first building at the STT Johor data center campus – STT Johor 1.
Located on 22 acres within the Nusa Cemerlang Industrial Park in Iskandar Puteri, the campus could offer up to 120MW of IT load at full build-out. The campus is set to offer densities of up to 12kW per rack.
STT Johor 1, the first facility to be built on the campus, is set to offer 16MW of IT capacity and is expected to be fully operational by end of 2026.
Located close to the border with Singapore, Johor is quickly becoming a data center hotspot as developers and operators look to secure overspill from Singapore amid ongoing capacity issues.
STT GDC announced plans for a Johor campus in November 2023, after it acquired the land from local real estate firm Crescendo Corp.
The company previously announced a Malaysian joint venture with local operator Basis Bay to develop two data centers in Cyberjaya, outside Kuala Lumpur.
"The ground-breaking of STT Johor 1 is a powerful testament of the New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP) 2030 in action. More than just a hyperscale data center, it is a launchpad for innovation, talent development, and sustainable economic growth,” said Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid, CEO of the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA).
Other developers and operators in Johor include PDG, AirTrunk, Equinix, Keppel, ChinData's Bridge DC, and Yondr.
