Singapore's Defense Science and Technology Agency (DSTA) has signed a contract with Oracle for an Oracle Cloud Isolated Region.
The region will support both the Ministry of Defense (MINDEF) and Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), giving them access to a high-performance, air-gapped, and secure sovereign cloud region as well as artificial intelligence services.
It is hoped the system will modernize the digital capabilities of the SAF's Command, Control, Communications, and Computers (C4) functions, increasing scalability and performance.
Oracle Cloud Isolated Region is a sovereign air-gapped - or disconnected from the Internet - hyperscale Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) region that offers the same services that are available in a public OCI region.
“The demand for secure and scalable cloud solutions is growing. It is more than just data storage and computing - it will be the foundation for a lot of innovation," said Ng Chad-Son, chief executive of DSTA. "Through this pilot collaboration with Oracle, we will harness advanced cloud and AI technologies to digitalize and transform our operations.
Rand Waldron, global defense CTO, Oracle, added: “Oracle has safeguarded the world’s most sensitive data for decades. We are pleased to bring this expertise to support the Singapore defense community’s missions.
“Our air-gapped, isolated cloud regions bring the capabilities of our public cloud and defense ecosystem to the world's most secure networks. Oracle is built to deliver the highest levels of security and performance for governments around the world.”
Singapore's DTSA has previously teamed up with French IT stalwart Thales, which has established a "Defense Hub" in the city-state to provide technical advancements to the agency.
Oracle currently has two commercial cloud regions in Singapore, as well as Oracle Interconnect for Azure and Google Cloud. The most recent cloud region launched in July 2024, with plans first announced in April 2023.
The company opened its first cloud region in Singapore in November 2021.
