Rackspace US Inc. has announced intentions to convert an abandoned shopping mall in San Antonio into an office and data center complex, which, it is hoped will earn recognition from the US Green Building Council's LEED certification.
About 95,000 square feet will be used for data center space, with innovative features that could include sensors to regulate air temperature based on the needs of different equipment.
According to ComputerWorld, Rackspace also plans to use barriers, panels and curtainlike dividers to keep hot air exhausted by servers away from other equipment. In addition, it is investigating whether the roof of the former Windsor Park Mall could support solar panels.
Randy Smith, Rackspace's real estate manager, said the company will put both the data center and office space on raised floors so the air temperature can be set on a cubicle-by-cubicle basis.
