Telco Segra has completed the expansion of its $10 million data center in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The Charlotte Business Journal reports the expansion project has taken two and a half years to complete, and has seen the facility reach 14,000 sq ft (1,300 sqm), double its original size.

The Segra data center is located at 3101 International Airport Drive in Charlotte. Segra gained ownership of the data center after it acquired the previous operator, DC47 Data Centers, in 2017.

The expansion is hoped to enable Segra to have the capacity to offer colocation, private cloud services, and multi-cloud exchange services to customers.

"Because of the growth and the need for our services, we had to expand the facility to provide more capability and optionality," Segra CEO Kevin Hart told CBJ.

Over the last three years, Segra has invested $50 million in its network and data centers in the Charlotte region, with its fiber network currently spanning around 2,000 miles locally.

This increased investment followed a series of mergers and acquisitions. Segra acquired high-speed bandwidth provider NorthState in 2020 for $240m. Cox Communications then bought Segra in late 2021, and combined the telco with Internet provider United Private Networks.

The merger with United Private Networks significantly expanded Segra's reach, increasing its network footprint from nine states to 28.

"For our large carrier customers that have needs in all those states, we can now be a one-stop-shop for them to provide additional footprint across a good portion of the US," said Hart.

The Charlotte-based telco is also looking at expanding its fiber network into Knoxville, Tennessee.

Segra serves more than 8,000 customers and has a 43,000-mile fiber route. According to a fact sheet from the company, Segra has a single data center in Augusta, Georgia; six in North Carolina; and three in West Virginia.
