Moldovan police have confirmed that Russian drones have flown into the country's airspace in the last week, even colliding with a communications tower on one occasion.
The country borders Ukraine, which has been in conflict with Russia since February 2022.
Drones have been used by both sides to attack communications infrastructure during the war, with Russia striking several sites and data centers with drones in Kyiv, Ukraine, over the last week.
However, Ukrainian media has reported that during these strikes, Russia violated the airspace of both Moldova and Romania, with drones reportedly falling in the territory of both countries.
In a Telegram post, the Police of the Republic of Moldova confirmed that a communications tower was struck by a drone yesterday (September 30) morning near the village of Girbovets.
In a translation of the post, the police service said that it found "multiple fragments of an unmanned aerial vehicle" within a radius of approximately 265 meters, "including components of the airframe, control system, power supply, and propulsion system."
Despite the collision, Moldovan police said that communications services were not disrupted.
Maia Sandu, president of Moldova, has condemned the airspace violations, stating that the Russia-Ukraine war threatens Europe.
"Russia's massive attack on Ukraine has hit Moldova again this morning: four Russian drones violated our airspace, and at least one exploded in the north. Russia's war poses a threat to all of Europe. We condemn this war and support Ukraine," said Sandu, per UA.news.
There have also been reported drone crashes in neighboring Romania over the last week.
