Amazon has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) to source power from AES from two of its new solar-plus-storage power plants in Adelanto, in California’s San Bernadino County.
Full details of the PPA have yet to be made available. However, AES has stated that Amazon will be the primary offtaker of the energy from the projects and use it to power its facilities in California.
The Baldy Mesa project was inaugurated on 24 October and comprises a 150MW solar PV generation capacity and a 75MW/300MWh battery energy storage system (BESS). The smaller Silver Peak comprises 50MW solar PV with 25MW/100MWh BESS.
The project is part of a broader power generation portfolio Amazon has procured to power its data center portfolio in California and Arizona, totaling 1.5GW of generation.
This is the third major renewable supply agreement signed between Amazon and AES. In May 2022, Amazon signed two PPAs to power its Californian operations with the company.
As part of the agreements, AES will deliver renewable energy in the CAISO (California Independent System Operator) market and source it from a combined 450MW of solar and 225MW, 4-hour BESS from its portfolio of projects.
