Hot on the heels of its Open Cloud release earlier this month, Rackspace Hosting has brought out software powered by OpenStack that helps companies install, test and run an OpenStack-based private cloud environment.

Rackspace called the software Alamo. It is based on the compute platform Nova which is used to run Rackspace clouds.

The software can be used for cloud deployments in Rackspace’s own environment or external data centers.

Rackspace VP of Technology Nigel Beighton said the solution essentially combines the capabilities of a public cloud with levels of customization required for private cloud environments.

“Rackspace Private Cloud based on OpenStack can be easily integrated into user’s existing investments in desktop hardware, network layers and data center resources,” Beighton said.

“From this point we anticipate that organizations will very quickly grasp the inherent control and customization power that they have at their command.”

Rackspace is offering support for Alamo through its Fanatical Support offering.

Open Cloud was designed for large-scale deployments and is made up of cloud databases and cloud servers based on OpenStack, which provides consistency with common APUIs to help reduce vendor lock in with the Cloud.

In an earlier interview, Beighton said Racksapce already has 1,000 customers trialling Open Cloud, and he believes many of these will move over to full commercial availability once the service becomes available in their region.
