Poste Italiane has secured an 85 percent stake in Italian telecoms company Telecom Italia.

The acquisition was confirmed late last week, after Poste Italiane acquired an additional 65.7 percent share in the carrier.

In total, Poste's stake in TIM is 85.82 percent, which is slightly short of the 90 percent threshold required for the company to take Telecom Italia private.

The announcement comes weeks after TIM's CEO Pietro Labriola and other key management personnel tendered the shares they hold to the voluntary full public tender and exchange offer launched by Poste Italiane.

Italy's state-controlled postal service, Poste Italiane, has been looking to take control of TIM for some time, before finally making headway this year.

The company was able to reach an agreement to buy the significant stake in the company in July after Telecom Italia's board members approved the takeover, worth an estimated €13 billion ($14.78bn).

Poste acquired a nine percent stake in the company in 2025 from Italy’s state-backed investor Cassa Depositi e Prestiti, before increasing its shareholding through two stock purchases from French conglomerate Vivendi. Vivendi was previously TIM's largest shareholder; however, the company publicly disagreed with the sale of NetCo.

TIM previously sold its fixed network spin-off NetCo to investment firm KKR in a deal worth €22bn ($25bn) back in 2024. That sale covered Telecom Italia's landline grid network.
