NTT Data Group is finalizing an agreement with Anthropic for the development of a $6.3 billion data center in Western Japan.
As reported by Nikkei Asia, citing multiple unnamed sources, the data center would be located in Osaka Prefecture and would be the first dedicated facility for Anthropic in the country.
The companies aim to finalize the agreement by the end of fiscal year 2026. Neither company provided a comment to the publication.
The data center would have up to 500MW of capacity, and partial operations are expected to begin in 2028.
Anthropic has been rapidly scaling up its compute capacity. Since October last year, the company has signed agreements for at least 14.8GW of compute capacity that it will access over the next few years.
The compute capacity agreements span both data center facilities and cloud capacity - including with Akamai, Amazon Web Services, CoreWeave, and a $50bn partnership with AI cloud firm Fluidstack. Other companies it has signed agreements with include SpaceX/xAI, Google Cloud, Lambda, Volta Infra, AMD, and Microsoft.
A large portion of the data center projects are based in the US, but the Australian Financial Review has previously reported that the company is in talks with local companies in the country.
Anthropic confidentially filed for an Initial Public Offering with the US SEC this June. Details were very sparse, and no further updates have been provided yet.
According to its website, NTT Data Group operates more than 150 data centers in more than 20 countries and regions. In Japan, the company operates data centers in Tokyo (TKY11) and Osaka (OSK11 and OSK12).
