NTT Communications, a subsidiary of the Japanese telecoms giant, has opened a purpose-built data center in the Pudong Development Zone of Shanghai, China.
The carrier-neutral facility operated under the Nexcenter brand offers 2,600 square meters of raised floor space - enough to host around 1,000 server racks.
NTT claims highly efficient design of its third Shanghai data center enables it to offer cloud and colocation services 20 percent cheaper than the regional average.
Surfing the wave
Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation was established by the Japanese government in 1952. Today, it is the largest telecommunications company in the world in terms of revenue, with around a third of its shares still owned by the state.
Its subsidiary NTT Communications runs a network of more than 130 data centers worldwide, serving 196 countries and regions.
According to NTT Coms, the Chinese data center market grew 20 percent in 2013, and the new facility should help meet the increasing demand for enterprise –grade cloud services.
Shanghai Pudong is located a short drive away from central Shanghai. The campus offers complete power, cooling and network redundancy for 99.9999 percent availability. The data halls are able to support loads of up to 10kVA per rack. However, the PUE expectations have been set pretty high, at 1.5.
The new data center enjoys direct links to a number of network providers across China and supports Border Gateway Protocol (BGP). It also offers 24/7 support in Japanese, English and Chinese – which could be interpreted as an open invitation for international companies. NTT says the facility is aimed primarily at customers in the areas of finance, manufacturing and IT.
