American software developer Nitro is planning to set up a data center in Ireland, its first facility outside the US.

According to the Irish Times, the project is currently in the due diligence stage.

Nitro arrived to Ireland last year, opening an office in Dublin’s ‘silicon docks’. The company already employs 30 people there, and expects to hire another 120 to 170 within three years.

The announcement was made during the annual Web Summit in Dublin.

Flush with cash
Nitro was founded in Australia in 2005, but soon moved to San Francisco. The start-up develops document management and collaboration software including Nitro Pro, a popular alternative to Adobe Acrobat.

In 2013, Nitro expanded its product range to offer platform-agnostic document services in the cloud, as part of the Nitro Cloud.

The company has just secured US$15 million in a series B financing round from Battery Ventures, an investment fund based in Massachusetts. It plans to spend some of this money on a new European data center for its cloud offerings.

“We have the green-light from our board to do this. It will be a multimillion investment in a location to be decided,” said Niall Gilmore, Nitro’s recently appointed director for EMEA.

John O’Keeffe, VP for EMEA added that Europe is a very important market for the company, responsible for 35 to 40 percent of sales.
