MTN Group is on track to turn off its 3G network in South Africa by the end of the year.

My Broadband this week reported that MTN has shut down its 3G network in several Cape Town neighborhoods already.

The publication reports that MTN informed certain customers in Cape Town about its pilot 3G switch-off in January last year, which began shortly after.

“Once the pilot phase is completed, MTN will assess the project before rolling out the 3G migration on a large scale. The 3G transition is scheduled to be completed by 31 December 2025,” it explained.

The Department of Communications and Digital Technologies outlined plans to phase out 3G back in September 2022.

As with many carriers, MTN will instead focus on 4G and 5G technologies.

MTN said its pilot last year included Durbanville, Greater Melkbosstrand, Cape Town suburbs, and the Milnerton Bloubergstrand areas in Cape Town.

The purpose of the pilot was to "assess migration process and optimize future rollouts," reported MyBroadband.

Earlier this week, Latvian operator Tele2 announced that it will complete its 3G shutdown next month.
