Singaporean renewable energy developer Sembcorp has signed a 25-year energy supply agreement with a subsidiary of Meta, Malkoha Pte, to construct, own, and operate a 150MW floating solar project in Singapore.

The project will be developed by Sembcorp’s wholly owned subsidiary Sembcorp Solar Singapore. When operational, the project will supply energy to Meta’s data center operations in Singapore.

The project will be built on the Kranji Reservoir in northern Singapore. Construction of the project is expected to start in the first half of 2027, dependent on necessary approvals from local authorities.

The agreement would be one of the first tied to a floating solar farm. Floating solar farms are an experimental concept that involves the deployment of solar panels on a body of water, such as a reservoir or lake. The panels are usually anchored to the bottom or sides of the water body for stability.

Meta first entered the Singaporean market in 2018 when it broke ground on its Tanjong Kling data center. The facility reached operational status in 2022 and spans 170,000 sqm (1.8m sq ft) of space.

The company previously signed a 5MW floating solar PPA and a 100MW distributed rooftop solar deal in Singapore, both with Sunseap.

Singapore is also home to several other major data center operators, including Equinix, Global Switch, Telehouse, Digital Realty, and Iron Mountain.

As a result, renewable energy supply agreements have become a popular means amongst operators to decarbonize their operations.

Last week, Digital Realty claimed that it had achieved 100 percent renewable energy coverage across its operations in Singapore, following an offtake agreement with Tuas Power, one of Singapore’s largest power generation firms.

Before this, Equinix signed a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Sembcorp for 58.5MW of power from a solar project in Singapore.

Headquartered in Singapore, Sembcorp has an energy portfolio of 25.1GW, including 17GW of gross renewable capacity across 11 countries.

In addition to its PPAs with Equinix, the company has also signed a long-term PPA with Singtel in Singapore.
