Meta has signed a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Enel North America for 115MW of energy from the 140MW Rockhaven wind farm in Murray and Carter counties, Oklahoma.
The onshore wind project entered commercial operation in December 2021. It comprises 49 turbines that generate an estimated 616GWh of energy per year.
“We are thrilled to again partner with Enel to bring renewable energy to the grid,” said Urvi Parekh, global head of energy at Meta. “These projects support our regional operations and data centers, as well as our goal to match our electric usage with 100 percent clean and renewable energy.”
This is the third PPA between the two companies in the US market. In 2018, Meta signed two PPAs with Enel to purchase the entire output of the 320MW Rattlesnake Creek wind farm in Nebraska to power its data center in Sarpy County.
Following this, in June 2023, Meta agreed to offtake 125MW of power from Enel’s 200MW Alta Farms wind farm in Illinois to support its DeKalb data center. The DeKalb data center was officially launched in November 2023. The campus covers 2.3 million sq ft (213,677 sqm) and cost an estimated $1 billion to construct.
“We’re excited to expand our partnership with Meta through our third PPA. Meta has exemplified how the technology sector can build an interconnected future powered by clean energy,” said Stephen Pike, head of Enel Green Power North America.
Enel North America has more than 11GW of installed wind and solar capacity across the US and more than 1GW of energy storage.
In addition to its PPAs with Meta, it has signed several other renewable supply agreements with technology and telco companies in recent years. For example, in January 2023, it signed a 12-year renewable energy purchase agreement with US telco Verizon for up to 100MW of wind power in the Southwest Power Pool regional market.
Meta has signed numerous PPAs across the US to power its operations and support its commitment to reach net zero emissions across its value chain by 2030.
Late last year, Meta agreed to a long-term PPA with Longroad Energy to purchase 100 percent of the output of the 300MWac (400MWdc) '1000 Mile' solar project in Yoakum County, Texas.
Before this, in November, it signed an Environmental Attributes Purchase Agreement with Engie North America for 260MW of energy from its Sypert Branch solar project in Milam County, Texas.
Meta has also signed PPAs in Indiana, Illinois, Arkansas, and Louisiana during 2024 for more than 1.2GW of contracted power.
