Meta Platforms plans to lay off some five percent of its staff from February 11 to March 13.

The cuts are expected to run across the company, targeting what Meta calls the "lowest performers."

Most employees set to be terminated will find out from 5am local time on Monday, according to a memo by Meta's head of people Janelle Gale, seen by Reuters.

Some employees in Europe, Asia, and Africa will find out later, while employees in Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands will be exempt from the cuts "due to local regulations."

In a separate memo, VP of engineering for monetization Peng Fan said: "Thank you for your continued support in helping us achieve our accelerated hiring goals, and better align with our company's priorities for 2025."

The company is expected to backfill some roles, and hire more machine learning engineers.

"On Monday, almost every team at Meta, including mine, is going to part ways with some great people," Meta engineering manager Chris Hawkins said on LinkedIn.

"In normal circumstances, these folks may have received a dreaded 'meets most' rating, a kick up the arse to tell them they need to change something. They would listen to the feedback and often come back from it stronger and better.

"If you’re hiring, don’t overlook these folks. They are very good at what they do, and their next employer will be lucky to have them."
