Avangrid, the North American arm of Spanish utility Iberdrola has announced that its 238MW True North Solar project has reached commercial operations.
The project is tied to a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Meta, which was originally signed in March 2023.
The project will deliver energy to Meta’s operations in the region, including its Temple, Texas facility, which is currently under construction. The project will also deliver power to the Texas grid to support overall grid reliability across the state.
“True North is a milestone project for Avangrid, and we are proud to see it generating electricity for the Texas grid,” said Pedro Azagra, Avangrid CEO.
“With a projected boom in data center construction over the next several years that will significantly increase energy demand, projects like True North are and will be vital to ensuring the resiliency and reliability of the Texas electrical grid. Furthermore, these facilities represent new sources of locally produced power that will support the state’s growing economy for decades to come," he continued.
The completion of the project adds to Meta’s robust renewable energy profile in Texas. Meta has already signed several renewable supply agreements within the state this year.
Earlier this month, it signed a PPA with RWE to purchase 100 percent of the output from the upcoming 200MW Waterloo Solar project in Bastrop County, Texas. Construction on the solar farm is set to start in late 2025.
Before this, in January, it signed four Environmental Attribute Purchase Agreements with Spanish renewable energy developer Zelestra. The EAPAs will facilitate the construction of four solar projects in Texas.
The projects are located in the Hopkins, Lamar, Lampasas, and Henderson Counties and have a combined capacity of 595MWac (720MWdc).
Finally, in December last year, the company inked a PPA with Longroad Energy to purchase 100 percent of the output of the 300MWac (400MWdc) '1000 Mile' solar project in Yoakum County, Texas.
