Korean electrical equipment manufacturer LS Electric has secured an order worth 185.3 billion won ($138.5m) from fuel cell developer Bloom Energy to support the deployment of fuel cells at a data center in Pennsylvania.

As part of the deal, LS will supply Bloom with 38kV high-voltage switchgear and distribution transformers for use at the site. Deliveries of the units are expected to be completed from April to July next year. While not confirmed, the equipment is likely to be for Aligned Data Centers' "Project Phoenix" campus in Shippingport, Pennsylvania. Bloom is expected to deploy up to 2GW of fuel cells at the under-construction campus, to power it behind-the-meter.

The deal is the second between the two firms, following a 319 billion won ($216.5 million) contract signed in April to supply similar systems for a large-scale data center project in New Mexico. While not explicitly reported by the companies, the data center is likely the Project Jupiter facility being developed by Oracle and BorderPlex Digital Assets in Doña Ana County, New Mexico.

Bloom is the leading company specializing in fuel cell solutions for the data center industry. The company’s SOFC fuel cells work by converting fuel into electricity via an electrochemical reaction, rather than combustion, which Bloom claims results in much higher efficiency and lower emissions.

Earlier this year, it expanded an agreement with Oracle to supply it with up to 2.8GW of capacity. The companies inked a deal last year for an initial 1.2GW of capacity, with deployments currently underway and expected to continue into next year.

Bloom has also signed deals with Equinix for deployments across 19 data centers, with a capacity exceeding 100MW. As well as an agreement with US utility American Electric Power for up to 1GW of SOFCs to power AI data centers off-grid.

Last year, the company inked a $5 billion AI infrastructure partnership with global investment firm Brookfield, under which Brookfield will invest in the firm to support the development and deployment of its technology.
