Juniper Networks has released a new router designed for edge services with a single, virtualized platform it said can transform the network edge into a “powerful platform” for rapid service deployment.
It claims it is the most powerful edge services router yet, providing 69% faster time to revenue for multivendor applications than other solutions.
The MX2020 3D Universal Edge Router comes with the JunosV App Engine, which together form what Juniper claims is the first hypervisor for the edge.
It allows service providers to drag and drop applications with ease and speed, including load balancing and security services and online gaming. Juniper said this can help drive new streams of revenue for service providers.
The National Institute of Informatics (NII) in Japan uses the JunosV app to manage bandwidth and low latency services.
NII Research Professor Michihiro Aoki said the Engine allows the institute to roll out applications much faster, making the management of its network - which connects universities and research institutions in Japan and around the world - for research collaboration.
“JunosV App Engine is a way for us to seamlessly create and simultaneously operate multiple applications on a single platform, reducing application migration time for future and new generation internet,” Aoki said.
Ultimately, according to Juniper Networks Edge and Aggregation Business Unit SVP Rami Rahim, the MX 2020 3D edge services engine delivers a gateway for everything the network has to offer through one system. This, according to Rahim, is where much of its benefit lies.
“Thousands of MX customers have validated the need for massive scaling and reduced complexity driven by emerging video, applications and cloud-based services,” Rahim said.
The routers have 80Tbps capacity and enough bandwidth to deliver HD video to the equivalent of every European premier league football game attendee in the top six football countries six times over, according to Juniper.
The edge services router makes use of the Junos Trio Chipset, which provides “massive 3D scaling across bandwidth, subscribers and services and are interchangeable with existing Trio-based line cards”.
The router can also support 40Tbps capacity.
