The rollout of the Unitirreno cable has begun.
The 1,200km cable, landing in four points across Italy, has begun construction, as reported by Telecom Paper.
The cable system’s main trunk will connect Mazara del Vallo to Genoa and includes branches to Rome and Fiumicino.
Once complete in June 2025, the cable will offer 480 Tbps across 24 fiber pairs.
Alcatel Submarine Networks is the supplier of the project.
Plans for the Unitirreno subsea cable system were confirmed in February last year, with Sparkle agreeing to land the cable at its Genoa landing station in July 2024. Other landing partners on the project have not been confirmed.
Unitirreno is owned by telecoms, cloud, and IoT company Unidata, the Infrastructure Fund for ESG Growth of Azimut Libera Impresa, and a team of senior executives.
Genoa is currently a landing point for the 2Africa, Blue, and Medloop cables, with the EMC West-1 expected to land in 2027. Mazara del Vallo is home to the Didon, Hannibal, Italy-Libya, Janna, and MENA cables, whilst only the BlueMed cable lands in Rome. Unitirreno will be the first cable to land in Fiumicino.
