Data center and cloud firm Iren has outlined plans for a new data center campus in Australia.
Iren this week announced plans for Redbank, a proposed data center campus near Wagga Wagga in regional New South Wales.
The company said the 900MW campus is in the early assessment phase and the firm is working toward a grid connection starting in 2029. The campus could see more than AU$10 billion (US$7bn) invested.
Wagga Wagga is a city in the Riverina region of New South Wales, some 455km (283 miles) southwest of Sydney and more than 230km (143 miles) west of Canberra.
According to a dedicated project website, the proposed campus site sits west of the Gregadoo Waste Management Centre, near Wagga Wagga on land that hosts existing transmission infrastructure.
Site renderings suggest at least four buildings of varying sizes and an on-site substation.
The grid-connected project would see Iren fund transmission costs and contract new renewable energy and storage to cover its needs. The campus would also have a closed-loop cooling system to reduce water use.
Iren noted the project is not included in its previously announced 5GW secured-power portfolio.
“Redbank has the potential to create local jobs and economic stimulus as well as community benefits for the Wagga Wagga area,” the company said.
Leading Edge DC, an Australian Edge data center firm, has a small facility in Wagga Wagga. CDC is also looking to develop in Wagga Wagga, with plans for a gigawatt-scale campus.
Founded in 2019, Iren has crypto and AI sites located across Canada and the US. It has some 23,000 GPUs in its fleet, with Microsoft as a major customer. The company has data center sites live and in development across Texas (Childress, Sweetwater), Oklahoma (Kiowa), and British Columbia in Canada (Mackenzie, Prince George, and Canal Flats). It recently acquired Spanish data center developer Nostrum, marking its entry into Europe.
Iren is also targeting an 800MW campus in Bundey, South Australia. Announced in June, a grid connection is expected around 2028.
The company alluded to a potential expansion to Australia earlier this year when it reported its financial results. CEO Roberts said at the time that the opportunity down under was “as significant as anywhere in our portfolio.”
