Thus far, Tata Power has migrated 23 mission-critical applications to AWS using Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service, which aims to improve the scalability, security, and operational efficiency across areas including power generation, renewables, grid management, sales, and finance.

The company intends to use real-time analytics, automation, and decentralized power generation to optimize supply and demand, and will use AWS' cloud computing capabilities, as well as AI offerings and IoT technology to improve efficiency.

Tata Power has also developed two specialized data lakes dedicated to power generation and renewables which gather real-time data from solar farms, wind assets, smart meters, and Industrial IoT devices. These data lakes have been integrated into Amazon S3's storage solution and will be used for predictive maintenance, grid optimization, and demand forecasting.

The company said: "By integrating a cloud-first digital infrastructure, Tata Power is accelerating India’s clean energy shift while setting a global benchmark for sustainable, data-driven power utilities that keep customer empowerment at their core. This collaboration with AWS marks a significant step in redefining energy management for a net-zero future, reinforcing Tata Power’s leadership in smart and sustainable energy solutions."

Tata Power is one of India's leading power companies and has a portfolio of 6.7GW of clean energy generation, which makes up 43 percent of its total capacity. The company, which is part of Tata Group, India's largest multinational business conglomerate, is aiming to achieve carbon neutrality before 2045.

Among Tata Group's subsidiaries is Tata Communications, and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), an IT and software services company. Tata Communications has 44 data centers globally, from which it offers colocation services. TCS is a Premier Tier Services Partner of AWS.

At the start of this year, AWS committed to investing $8.3 billion in developing cloud infrastructure for its AWS Asia-Pacific (Mumbai) Region in Maharashtra, India. The company first entered the Indian market with its Mumbai region launching in 2016. The company invested $3.7bn into that region between 2016 and 2022, and later launched a cloud region in Hyderabad in 2022.

Towards the end of 2024, reports emerged that AWS had acquired a 38.18-acre parcel of land in Palava, just outside of Mumbai from realty developer Lodha.

AWS is also planning Local Zones in Chennai and Bengaluru, with operating Local Zones in Delhi and Kolkata.
