India’s state government in Odisha is planning to build a cable landing station (CLS) in Puri.
As reported by The Economic Times India, the state government’s Electronics and IT department has initiated plans to establish Odisha as a global digital hub.
Plans for the CLS are being prepared by RailTel and Deloitte.
The initiative will strengthen the state’s digital infrastructure, catalyze investments in data centers, attract technology players, and generate jobs, according to an official government release.
Chief secretary Manoj Ahuja said consultations with hyperscalers will take place to ensure the facility is future-proof, with completion slated for three years time.
Further details of the cable landing station have not yet been shared.
Puri was chosen as the ideal location for its geographic position, suitable coastline, scalability potential, and robust existing infrastructure.
Subsea cables in India have historically been located in Chennai and Mumbai. Puri, like Chennai, is located along the east coast of India.
CtrlS announced plans to invest $18.1 million in Odisha in 2023.
The Government of Odisha is not the only Indian state government building digital infrastructure to attract tech investment. The Andhra Pradesh government recently announced plans to build a 500-acre "Data City" in Visakhapatnam to attract tech players. Likewise, the Telangana government has teamed up with Blackstone data center company, Ursa Clusters, and Tillman Global Holdings to build several data center facilities in the state.
