Internet Initiative Japan announced the third model in its line of container-like data center modules called IZmo.

The first two models, the original IZmo and the co-IZmo model, which is currently going through proof-of-concept testing, maximized the use of outside air for cooling. co-IZmo is reportedly designed to be 100% cooled by outside air, without the use of air conditioning.

In addition to its compact size, the new 20-foot co-IZmo I is designed to work in environments where corrosive-gas concentration in the air is too high to effectively filter and prevent it from damaging IT equipment. The new model has an indirect outside-air cooling system, which isolates IT gear from outside air and cools warm exhaust air by heat transfer, still using outside air but also a cooling compressor.

A co-IZmo I setup can be scaled from one to three modules. The company also provides options for additional UPS (uninterruptible power supply) and emergency generator modules.

IIJ is pitching the solution as a way to stand up a private cloud and connect it to its GIO services, which include cloud infrastructure and network connectivity services. The company offers GIO in China, the US and Europe.

In addition to the three IZmo products described above, IIJ is currently developing co-IZmoSD, a version of the containerized data center module controlled entirely through software.

The company has used IZmo containers to deploy infrastruture at its Matsue Data Center Park in Matsue, Japan.
