Revealed during the Huawei Cloud Summit Nigeria 2024, the local cloud will ensure data stays within Nigeria's boundaries and meets data protection laws.

In addition, Huawei says the local cloud will reduce latency for customers from more than 80 milliseconds to 15 milliseconds. According to Huawei, the cloud region is housed in "Tier III+ data centers."

It is unclear which data centers the cloud region is housed in, nor the exact region in Nigeria where they are located, though much of Nigeria's data center market is in and around Lagos.

At the launch event, the deputy governor of Lagos State, Dr. Kadi Obafemi Hamzat, said: "Lagos State has been working with Huawei for a while, and today's event reaches its zenith with the launch of the Huawei Local Cloud.

"This marks a significant milestone for Nigeria in our journey towards technology advancement. The introduction of a local cloud by Huawei is a huge deal because it would largely help businesses and everyone, as it'll also enhance sovereignty. I encourage all to embrace these ideas as they set a transformative course for Lagos, Nigeria, and Africa at large."

Huawei Nigeria's CEO Chris Lu added: "Not knowing where your data is stored is terrifying. The Huawei local cloud provides a world where your data and that of your customers are safely protected.

"For Huawei, it's important that we build in Nigeria because we have been working with our local partners who are great in developing applications and services for various industries and consumers. So, it became imperative to serve them with a local cloud which helps us provide lower latency and better services to our customers so that they feel confident and secure while ensuring the data sovereignty of their customers."

In September 2024, Huawei won a $3 million cloud computing contract from the United Bank for Africa, one of Nigeria's largest financial institutions. The deal saw Huawei agree to provide 200 petabytes of storage as well as cloud computing solutions.

This month, Huawei also launched a cloud region in the Philippines.
