South African web hosting company Hetzner has added 20% capacity to its national data center capacity with the expansion of its Cape Town Great Westerford Data Centre.

Hetzner has facilities in Germany and four South Africa, and two data centers in Cape Town.
The Westerford site was its first construction in the city.

The expansion feature energy efficient cooling and UPS systems.

Hetzner said all new customers will have server orders placed in this expanded building.

"With this facility Hetzner is returning to designing and operating is own data centers in close collaboration with its engineering colleagues in Germany," Hetzner said.

This year Hetzner started building a data center on a 40,000 sq m site in Nuremberg, Germany.

The data center has been designed to house 30,000 servers. It will use direct free cooling when it opens this year.

Hetzner said that by managing its own facilities it can take complete control over the engineering detail of the hosting environment, "enhancing the long-term proposition for our customers".

It said it is also considering expansion in the Gauteng province, the region that contains the largest city in South Africa, Johannesburg.
