Australian data center firm GreenSquare has launched the first phase of its campus in Sydney, New South Wales.
The company this week announced that the first stage of its SYD1 data center campus in Norwest Business Park, Western Sydney, is now operational.
The company is initially reusing an IBM data center originally opened in 1995. Delivered in eight months, the site has been updated to support high-density AI workloads and direct-to-chip liquid cooling.
Located at 3 Brookhollow Avenue, main construction works began in February 2026, with GreenSquare working with Erilyan and Fredon on the project.
The data center is serving Australian AI cloud firm Sharon AI, which is deploying approximately 8,200 Nvidia Blackwell Ultra GPUs at the facility.
GreenSquare CTO, Joshua Martens, said: “We saw an opportunity to give a 30-year-old data center a completely new purpose. By rethinking the building's configuration, introducing prefabricated systems design, and using the latest technology to reduce carbon, we've created a facility that can support some of today's most demanding compute requirements while using resources far more efficiently.”
GreenSquareDC launched in October 2022 and was acquired by Swiss private equity firm Partners Group back in March 2025.
GreenSquare said the building retained the existing slab, with data halls relocated to the ground floor to accommodate higher-density compute without additional structural reinforcement. The company said this increased IT capacity within the original building footprint by 275 percent.
The company also replaced the original cooling towers with a closed-loop cooling system that operates without evaporative cooling for approximately 96 percent of the year. Rainwater harvesting is also expected to offset approximately 10 percent of annual cooling water requirements, reducing reliance on potable water.
GreenSquare is set to expand the campus with a new 80MW development, taking the site to 110MW.
GreenSquare launched with plans for a development in Perth, Western Australia, but dropped the project earlier this year. It is planning a large-scale development in Melbourne, Victoria.
Nasdaq-listed Sharon currently utilizes Equinix in Sydney and NextDC in Melbourne for data center capacity. It is also partnering with CDC. The neocloud has said it has 212MW of capacity online or in development, and some 64,000 Nvidia GPUs due to be deployed by mid-2027. The firm, which went public earlier this year, recently bought a former paper mill in New South Wales, and in the US has a large project planned in Texas.
