Greenlandic telco Tusass has broken ground on its new data center in Nuuk.
The company this week announced the first blasting for the new facility was carried out on Monday March 3.
Tusass siulittaasoq/chairperson Ulrik Blidorf says: “With this blast, we have officially launched the first initiative in our new strategy. I look forward to its completion in 2027, after which we will be able to provide more secure and stable connections to everyone in the country.”
The company first announced plans for a new Tier III-quality facility to be located in the Qinngorput area of the capital city last month. The telecoms firm said the project will total DKK 155 million ($21.5m).
Further details on location and specifications were not shared and the telco declined to share details with DCD. The new facility will be built "primarily to support and increase the security" of Tusass’ operations, according to a spokesperson.
Tele Greenland A/S was created in 1997 through the merging of Tele Greenland and Kalaallit Allakkeriviat (Greenland Postal Service). The state-owned company was rebranded to Tusass in 2021.
Online listings such as DataCenterMap suggest that Tusass currently operates one data center in Nuuk.
The data center is being built by Greenlandic construction company Permagreen in collaboration with Polar EL and HJ-Tek. Johnson Controls, PM Energi, Scanpotec, and Opmatic will be responsible for the technical installations. COWI is assisting as a general consultant, with Masanti and Arkitema as sub-consultants.
Greenland is an autonomous territory in the Kingdom of Denmark. This week, US President Donald Trump said that his country would take control of Greenland “one way or the other."
