Google has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Apex Clean Energy for the entire capacity of the latter's Rocky Forge Wind project in Botetourt County, Virginia.

The 79.3MW onshore wind project, Virginia’s first, comprises 13 turbines. It will utilize GE wind turbines and is slated to begin commercial operations in 2026.

The PPA was signed on December 18, 2024.

Rocky Forge will supply energy to Google’s data centers in Virginia, supporting the company’s goal to achieve net-zero emissions and 24/7 carbon-free energy by 2030.

“The Rocky Forge Wind project builds on our strong collaboration with Apex Clean Energy to both support decarbonizing our operations in Virginia and the broader PJM grid system,” said Amanda Peterson Corio, Google's head of data center energy.

The PPA is the second between the two companies. In August 2023, they signed an offtake agreement for the full capacity of the 189MW Tumbermill Wind project in Chowan County, North Carolina.

The PPA contributes to the energy needs of Google’s data centers on the PJM grid. In the PJM Interconnect region, Google has data centers in Ohio, Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee.

Google signed numerous PPAs over 2024. These include a 12-year PPA with EnergyRe to purchase energy from an unnamed 435MW solar project.

In addition, it has signed solar PPAs with EDPR and NextEra Energy in Indiana and Nebraska, respectively.

In April, it was reported that Google had signed 1.5GW worth of PPAs during the previous 12-month period, facilitated through a new PPA procurement process developed in partnership with LevelTen Energy.
