Google plans to invest $15 billion to expand its data center infrastructure in Malaysia during 2027 and 2028.
Bloomberg reports that the funding will go toward building new computing hubs and investing in water and power infrastructure in the country.
Data center investment will focus on Google's existing campus in the Elmina Business Park, Selangor, and will also see the company develop new campuses in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan. Construction would run through 2027 and 2028.
Google bought 389 acres of land in Port Dickson in Negeri Sembilan in May last year, where it intends to build the data center. Port Dickson is located some 90km (55.9 miles) south of Kuala Lumpur, on the banks of the Strait of Malacca. According to reports, the data center will have a capacity of between 500MW and 1GW, with Gamuda Engineering in charge of the engineering and infrastructure works.
Google broke ground on its existing data center campus in October 2024. The data center's first phase, which is expected to have a capacity of 100MW, is slated for completion sometime this year.
Details about the data center projects themselves are limited, but they are expected to support more than 9,000 local jobs a year, including technicians, mechanical and electrical engineers, logistics, and security managers.
Ruth Porat, Alphabet's chief investment officer, said the investment "reflects our confidence in the strength of Malaysia's leadership, its skilled workforce, and enthusiasm for digital transformation."
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim added: "Our nation possesses the stability, the talent, and the ambition to be a premier digital powerhouse in Southeast Asia.”
As the company increases its data center capacity in the country, Google will add energy capacity and help push the country's clean energy transition. In total, Google plans to bring 1GW of clean energy capacity to Malaysia's grid.
Earlier this week, Google committed $160 million to develop shared water infrastructure in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, to support its planned data center in the region.
This latest investment pledge builds on Google's commitment to invest $2 billion in the country back in 2024.
