The Global Telecom AI Alliance (GTAA) has announced a joint venture (JV) agreement to develop and launch a multi-lingual Large Language Model (LLM) for telcos.

Founding members of the GTAA revealed the plans at this year's TM Forum's DTW24-Ignite in Copenhagen, Denmark.

In a joint statement, the founding members, Deutsche Telekom, e& Group, Singtel, SoftBank Corp., and SK Telecom said the project aims to "help telcos improve their customer interactions via digital assists and other innovative AI solutions."

This week's announcement is no surprise, as the GTAA said in February during the Mobile World Congress that they plan to establish a joint venture specifically aimed at developing LLMs at some point this year.

LLMs are machine learning models that can understand and generate human language text while analyzing massive data sets of language.

According to the Alliance, the JV will "deploy AI applications tailored to the needs of the founding parties in their respective markets," enabling them to reach a global customer base of approximately 1.3 billion across 50 countries, which they collectively serve.

The Telco LLM will be multilingual including; Korean, English, German, Arabic, and Bahasa, plus other languages.

The launch of the JV is subject to customary regulatory approvals.

During this week's event, SK Telecom CEO, Ryu Young-sang, said the GTAA is "well positioned to be an active player in the global AI ecosystem as businesses worldwide are keen to reshape their business strategies through AI."

He added that the JV will drive new business opportunities and will deliver improved customer service for the telcos.
