Peru-based telco operator Global Fiber has announced plans for a subsea ‘festoon’ network connecting two Brazilian provincial capital cities.
The ‘festoon’ deployment will link multiple coastal points through subsea infrastructure without requiring immediate amplification.
These include the coastal cities of Belém in the state of Pará and Fortaleza in Ceará.
Padtec and Satelital are the partners on the project, having signed a partnership agreement earlier this month to offer turnkey solutions for submarine networks in Latin America.
The partnership also marks Padtec’s return to subsea infrastructure, after previously selling off its subsea division in 2019.
The Belem-Fortaleza cable is set to be operational by the end of 2025.
Obed Dionisio, CEO at Global Fiber, said: “By supporting the construction of the Belem-Fortaleza section, within the Lima-Fortaleza project, Global Fiber contributes to reducing digital gaps in difficult-to-access locations, providing all areas of the Amazon region with high-quality communication and a more connected Latin America.”
The Belem-Fortaleza subsea cable will be part of the larger project by Global Fiber to deploy a network across the Amazon region, connecting Lima and Fortaleza.
The telco recently contracted Nokia to complete the deployment of a subaquatic fiber network in the Amazon River, connecting Iquitos and Santa Rosa de Yaravi in Peru, Leticia in Colombia, and Tabatinga in Brazil.
The subaquatic network has been buried in the Amazon River and is located in the center of the Amazon rainforest, in an area known as the three-border region, where Peru, Colombia, and Brazil share borders.
Global Fiber Peru, a subsidiary of Satelital Group, operates a fiber optic network with coverage throughout Peru, across the country's 180 provincial capitals.
Brazilian fiber optic firm Padtec was founded in 2001 and said it has more than 40 points of presence across Latin America.
Brazil is home to the existing Brazilian Festoon cable, which spans 2,500km off the coast of the country and is owned by Embratel.
