The Swiss air navigation service Skyguide has restored operations after flooding impacted its data center.

Thunderstorms in the area on June 25 led to flooding, impacting Skyguide's data center reports Flight Global.

Specifically impacted was the cooling system, which is housed in the basement of the Geneva building, where the flooding was focused.

With the cooling system impacted, Skyguide was forced to close down the Geneva airspace for two hours and 30 minutes, which prevented both arrivals and departures. Capacity was then partially restored by June 26, before fully resuming on June 28.

A spokesperson for Geneva's airport, Ignace Jeannerat, said more than 50 inbound or outbound flights were canceled, and a dozen were diverted to other airports.

“Several measures have been taken to ensure that the air traffic control systems do not overheat and to guarantee the cooling of the control room,” Skyguide said in an update.

“Skyguide has acquired an additional external cooling system and a mobile diesel generator to support the existing, deteriorated generators. This ensures that the air traffic control systems can continue to function in the event of a power failure.”

The company notes that these are temporary solutions, and it will take some time to actually repair the damage caused by water on the premises. Skyguides notes that "further measures have also been taken to prevent such an event from happening again."
