General Electric's critical power business has launched a containerized power systems module for data centers called PowerMOD.

The container can be configured with a number of electrical infrastructure components, including GE’s automatic transfer switches, switchboards and transformers, along with its new TLE Series uninterruptible power supply (UPS).

Jeff Schnitzer, general manager of the critical power business, said, “GE PowerMOD delivers lower total cost of ownership and higher energy efficiency and can be deployed on-site faster than brick-and-mortar data centers.”

PowerMOD provides backup critical power from 200kW to 1,500kW in standard design points, for both 50-hertz and 60-hertz configurations. It can be deployed in four or five months, the company said.

Customers can save both capital and operational expenses if they choose the modular approach over traditional brick-and-mortar data center construction, according to GE.

The unit can be cooled with free cooling (via an economizer), direct expansion, chilled water or evaporative cooling.
