DayOne is the international unit of Chinese data center operator GDS.

As announced in a recent LinkedIn post, the operator said the data center park in Chonburi will be powered by 180MW of grid capacity and integrate liquid cooling technology to support high-performance computing.

The project will see $1 billion in investment over the next five years.

Other specifications of the campus have not been shared.

Jamie Khoo, CEO of DayOne, said: “Our $1 billion commitment will deliver state-of-the-art infrastructure capable of supporting AI, cloud computing, and high-performance digital services, positioning Thailand as a key hub for global digital infrastructure and technological innovation. We are proud to invest in Thailand’s future and collaborate with industry leaders to create a sustainable, next-generation data center ecosystem.”

GDS was founded in 2006 and operates dozens of data centers across Greater China, including in Suzhou Kunshan, Chengdu, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Beijing. STT GDC and Hillhouse are existing investors in GDS.

The company rebranded its international unit at the beginning of this year.

Over the past year, the company has secured approximately $1.9 billion through its Series A and Series B equity rounds via investors including SoftBank Vision Fund, Kenneth Griffin, CEO of Citadel, Coatue Management, and Baupost Group.

At the end of last year, the Thailand Board of Investment approved GDS’ data center project, alongside another project being built by Quartz Computing, an Alphabet Inc. affiliate. This came months after the Thailand Board of Investment also approved $291 million of investment for the data center industry.

Most recently, the Thailand Board of Investment approved $2.7 billion of data center projects in the country, including a project from Empyrion Digital.

Earlier this month, TikTok committed to investing $8.8 billion over the next five years in data centers in Thailand. AWS launched a cloud region in Thailand earlier this year, and Alibaba Cloud also launched a second data center in the country in February. Google has plans for a Thai cloud region it revealed in August 2022, and in September 2024, said it planned to spend $1 billion on cloud and data infrastructure in the country. Microsoft also plans to build a data center region in Thailand.

According to Datacenter Map, Chonburi is currently home to Supernap and TCCT Amata data centers.
